Matt Sims' route across the Alps to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

In 2009, my good friend jazz guitarist Scott Sherwood lost his battle with cancer.  Scott, one of the healthiest and most fit people I ever met, had beaten Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma once, but it came back.  He endured months of painful treatments and hospitals stays with much more tenacity than I could have ever mustered.  His courage and strength inspired me to try something big to try and make a difference in someone else’s life.

In the summer of 2010, I will attempt to hike across the Alps to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.  My route will take me from Oberstdorf, Germany across parts of Austria, Switzerland, and Italy and finish after approximately 20 days of walking at Lake Iseo.

Please support my effort and donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). I will be paying for the cost of the trip myself, and all of your donated funds go to the charity, not to me or to fund my trip.

Scott was inspired by the Alps and released a CD called PEAKS AND VALLEYS, so I am calling this trip the PEAKS & VALLEYS WALK ACROSS THE ALPS.

Cancer has affected so many lives. Wouldn’t it be nice to know you did something to help?  It’s easy.  Donate online using this page, and tell a friend to check out the page as well.  I’ll do my part and try to cross the Alps on foot.  Cancer can affect anyone at any age, even healthy people.  The LLS funds research and much more.  They actually paid for some cutting edge gene therapy he was getting toward the end. Any amount really helps. THANK YOU!

Update on Matt’s journey: By Monday evening (August 16th) he had hiked more than 10 hours across the Austria-Swiss border in rough weather and made it through Scuol, Switzerland.
