AFGE 5th District National Vice President Charlotte Flowers

She is in peaceful place where there is no more pain. We are all better people for having had the chance to meet and work with such an amazing crusader. My heartfelt sympathies to all who knew and loved her.

From time to time we are blessed to meet a great person. A leader who has fostered not only greatness as a leader but also the highest respect as a human.

She passes from our company, but for ever holds a spot in our heart, our minds and our spirit, we are her because she was us and we great because she was great. She, as with all great leaders has made each of us, those who follow.

Rest your soul and let your mind be at peace but for a moment, we each have a moment let us spend now.
~Melvin Smith
National Representative, 12th District

Could not have said it any better. May her soul rest in peace.

She took me under her wing when I joined the AFGE staff 7 years ago and showed me kindness, leadership, friendship, and strength. I will miss her.

Some years ago during AFGE’s intensive NSPS fight,  we set up an editorial board meeting with a newspaper and NVP Flowers.  She told us later when she arrived at the newspaper – a two-hour drive from her office – that  she was informed rudely by the receptionist that no such meeting was scheduled.  NVP Flowers persisted that she did in fact have a  meeting.  The editorial page editor came to the reception area and told her “Ma’am we are an anti-union newspaper,” to which NVP Flowers replied “So I have a meeting to discuss the National Security Personnel System and it’s impact on the defense department and  I’m not leaving here until I get a meeting.”   The editorial page editor reluctantly granted the meeting and  called in two other editorial writers and two reporters to join him in the newspaper conference room.  Two days later the newspaper wrote a pro-union editorial slamming NSPS.

  1. Charlotte was a kind and amazing woman. She will be dearly missed.

  2. She was union through and through and that is the highest compliment I can pay her. She battled through discrimination to become the Local President of a large DOD Local in Alabama and then NVP of AFGE’S largest District. She was always supportive of GCO’s work and she will be greatly missed.
    Peace Charlotte.

  3. As a member of AFGE 1872 (Shaw AFB) my heart and prayers go out to her family in their time of sorrow. Charlotte was a wonderful lady that worked tirelessly for all of us. I am sad to hear of her passing, but know she is at peace. I will miss her.

  4. I met Charlotte several years ago when I was a new leader at L2022. She was always available to give me advice and guidance. She shared her experiences with me, leaving the lasting impression she was a “spitfire” not to be contended with. I will miss her as a leader and as a friend. God Bless and may she rest in peace..

  5. Charolette you have earned your wings. You have two wings to veil your feet, two wings to veil your arms. There is a house made just for you, golden sleepers just for you, a crown which was made just for. The Lord is saying to you “Well done my good and faithful servant go on home and be with the Lord. Now it is up to the rest of us, to keep your legacy going.

  6. I remember my first encounter with Charlotte during Lunch & Learns at Anniston Army Base. She showed us how she would get inside a tank to do her job. Besides being a great unionist, Charlotte was a truly compassionate person and terrific boss. Through her leadership the locals in the “Fighting Fifth” became stronger and more effective. I know that her legacy of persistence and ‘doing what is right’ will live on forever through the union brothers and sisters she leaves behind. I am a stronger person for having met and worked with her.
